I'm a futaba user too but for that sort of budget you can't beat the DX6i. Make sure to get the new "DSMX" compatible version if you can.

I use the Futaba FF9 with either the 35mhz, 2.4Ghz FASST or Spektrum module Smile

My Son uses the Futaba 6XA 2.4Ghz version.

I've got an FF9 like Richard (it's an old model) with a spektrum and 35mhz module which I use for indoor flying, but also a Futaba 10C (also since superseded by the 10CG which isn't as good in my opinion as it lacks a module), thesedays you're looking at about 400 quid just for the transmitter and I use the it for most of my outdoors flying.

RE: 2.4ghz Tx/Rx buying help
Easier than helis do you mean? If so then YES!

Best way to get into it is go to the BMFA website and find a local club. You'll get to see loads of planes, including suitable trainers, and meet lots of likeminded people. Most clubs will also have an opportunity to give you a go on a dual controlled ("buddy box") system. You'll also get to see a bunch of different transmitters etc. Really can't recommend this route strongly enough.

If you're intending to go it alone (not recommended) then get something light and made of EPP so it won't do too much damage when it crashes. (it's a when, not an if, "they _all_ crash in the end" - first and best piece of advice my clubmates gave me!)

RE: 2.4ghz Tx/Rx buying help
The new Futaba 6J is quite cheap - not much over £100 IIRC. For a starter though I would probably stick to the Spektrum DX6i as John says. I still have one of these for my foamies and indoor models, and it's so easy to use and ideal if you're likely to forget to select the right model before powering up... Wink

Avoid the DX5e even if it's cheap - you'll grow out of it as soon as you decide to have another model!

As for starter planes, anything that looks like a high-wing cessna or piper cub shape will be easy to fly. Elevator/Rudder control is quite the norm for these models but you'll grow out of it quickly so I'd suggest finding one with aileron controls - you don't have to use them immediately!

Safety first! Never fly near airfields, populated areas, children or cats. (Dogs are ok)
