A new lease of LiFe
So...we are gathered over the flying site for the 2nd round of test flights and evaluation, with the assistance of Alan H with some 'top end' electrical measuring equipment so we can do some amp tests, and Hector P as 'model hanging on-er' while we go WOT for Alan to test the amp draw. All went without incident, and we got some good data.
Next on the agenda is another 'test' flight 1 minute longer than previous to evaluate the Lipo pack flight duration.
Strip all to myself, the final pre-flight showed the TX voltage had dropped to 9.4 voltsThumbs down back to the pits to discuss..and we aborted the session.
The TX had come off charge that morning.
Rather than fit a new 'nim' I decided it was time to embrace the new technology and go for a dedicated LiFe TX pack, have a LiFe charging program in my charger.Thumbs up
A quick surf on the net found the HYPERION FG305-2100-3S TRANSMITTER PACK and Andy's RobotBirds Emporium, the pack dimensions were about right, but not a drop in fit for the 'Antique Futaba 9ZAP'.
All on the bench, we made a start.

The 'ZAP' TX batt is in a case with some circuitry, just a tad too small to get the LiFe pack in.

After some measuring and pondering..I wanted to keep the 'board' in position and secure on the pins, so out with the Dremel and removed the board housing.

After some soldering..a JST charge fly lead and power leads in.

All soldered up, ready for install, bottle of fairy liquid handy to squeeze it all in.........Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

All went in with no Fairy Liquid.....Big GrinBig Grin

Job done....have 2 options for charging.
All I need now is some decent weather to conclude our test and evaluation program.....Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin

I don't have crashes, just mid-airs with the planet.............

RE: A new lease of LiFe
Tony,
That's fitted well. As a matter of interest what voltage does it give on your Tx.
Weather not looking good for the next few days. Tried Kempton this morning wind very light whilst standing in doorway of club hut, typical as soon as I flew my model and stood out on the strip it was windy.Huh Seems to happen every time. Had to revert to the kite.
