Guillows Cub RC conversion...
Hi guys..

I bought a Guillows 24" Cub today, with the intention of putting the gear from a 4ch Minium into it..
I'd love to put ailerons on, but I think for now, i'll just make it 3ch Ele/Rud control..

Anyone else tried this..?? I've just gone thru a load of posts on RCGroups about it, but now i just wanna get into the model room and start...

Luv
Chrisie.. xx

Interested in set-up and installation in a fragile model like that ?

Most of the crash is fine - it's the last mm and second that's not !.... Ex Model Display flyer returning to hobby after 25yrs in the wilderness !.....http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Flysky_RC_radio/ if user of FlySky Radio where I hope to collect together helpful data

Hi Chrisie

Are you going to use the brushed motor if so do you know how much thrust it produces? Im sure you already have a plan in your mind to work to you could weigh the kit parts guess at the glue weight then weigh the running gear. Its always fun being a pioneer!

Thrust sounds technical.. !! LOL..

I've searched around, and most people say there's too much wood in the kit, so it's already heavy.. The Peeps on RCGroups do the following..
Leave out every other wing spar
Reduce the size of the formers, rear of the wing
Adding dowels & bracing to the top of the roof to stop the wings collapsing in..

Apparently once they're doped, they're alot stronger, but as I have NO experience with tissue or dope, I don't know... It's all a bit of an experiment really.. Summut to do.. Smile

My only concern is that the 17" models are using minium/parkzone gear, but the 24" models, like mine, are mostly using separate 'proper' RC gear, 2s batts, etc.. BUT the one I saw on MeTube was climbing vertical and 3d, which I don't wanna do, so hopefully the minium gear should sufice for slow flying..

IIRC the 4ch motor is bigger than the 3ch anyway, so fingers crossed..

The parts in the kit are a bit rough, but there's nothing complicated about it, so most parts could be replicated is needed/crashed..

Hi Chrisie

Is the minium motor a 8mm diameter coreless like the PZ Sukhoi if so Ive attached a bit of data another chap complied which may give some indication of the short of thrust you may get?
Your right about making the plane as light as possible but if your flying it outside I think you can get away with a bit more weight. You could try a plastic lightweight film like Polyester tissue or Mylar see link
The only 20 ws model I made was from 3mm EPP and it came out at 43 grams and flew really well (when the electrics werent playing up)

http://www.freeflightsupplies.co.uk/ look for the covering section.

Thanks Arcright...Exclamation

I've just measured the motors from both an old defunct 3ch, and the 4ch, and they're both 6mm.. I remember reading that the 4ch had a more powerful motor, but the only difference is colour..

The 3ch is on the left, 4ch right.. Both have 95mm props..
İmage

Judging by the power of my new Minium Edge, I guess thats got an 8mm motor, but also a bigger prop and lower gearing..
İmage

Unfortunately its too much fun and too new to rip apart yet.. Big Grin

I'm just about to put a post up with build pics, and have noted the weight of parts for reference. So far, with only the tail covered, but not doped, the airframe weights 32.5g..
