11 Smile New to planes...
Hello guys

New to to the forum and new to planes Smile
I just bought my first plane last week and tried to fly it by my self ... not quite there lol ... then I visited my local RC flying club and I had a few volunteers one has flown my plane for about 2 minutes, then it crashed...
It was a still day with not a single breath of wind... however the plane could not go above 6m, we just found with the equipment it had on it was underpowered. My plane is a Guan Li Plane ...
I did not buy it from there ... but you can see all the spec etc.

I am looking to upgrade to brushless with esc and lipo battery, just to give it a small power boost.

In my eyes once I manage to fly the plane if it is a bit higher then I have more time to correct mistakes etc.

I have a list of things that I am looking to buy... any opinions are welcome

PS ignore the Tx and Rx as I am not sure if I get them yet...

The only thing missing is the propella ... which I have no clue what to select.

RE: New to planes...
Just the 3 cell lipo alone would give it a boost.

Not sure about that motor you picked, I cant find any details on it. I think you need one about 2000kv to swing a 5-6 inch prop, anything bigger and the prop may hit the ground.

Too bad stupid isn't painful.

Surely I cannot put lipo with the existing brushed setup or can I ?

You can Smile

The brushed motor will eventually burn out if you use a lot of throttle and let the motor get too hot but you will have had a fair share flights by then. They are cheap you could replace it or then get a brushless motor and speed controller to suit.

RE: New to planes...
the Guan-Li like all the others are all underpowered with the Brushed set-ups. It's ok if you are experienced and can ease the plane up into air ... but most want to haul it up - brushed motors fitted are often 370 geared and just not powerful enough.

No need to dump the Guan-Li ... no need to buy another ......... there are loads of Brushless motors that will suit ... and sorry to say it - but there are cheaper good motors via such as RCTimer, Go-Go RC on ebay etc. ....

I think you have Guan-Li J3 Piper Cub ?

On the uan-Li site - it gives the Brushless spec as well ... 2410 BL motor, 11.1v 1000mAh Lipo, 8x3.5 prop, 435gr AUW etc.

So based on that .............. using my usual sources ...

Motor : http://www.rctimer.com/index.php?gOo=goo...oductname=

A 2812 Brushless motor of 1534KV .... more power than it needs but will throttle back nicely.

ESC : 30A or higher ... loads on ebay ... but suggest buy from same source as motor ... http://www.rctimer.com/index.php?gOo=goo...oductname=

A programmable 30A ESC with same as Hobbywing - so means a program card will work with it ... available at RCTimer as well.

LiPo battery pack : Now this is as you can fit to the model ... what I do is measure the slot the battery fits into ... and then find largest capacity battery on ebay that will fit in that slot. I even if the slot is foam sided - use a soldering iron to enlarge it to get pack of MY choice in. There are lots of 3S (11.1V) 1000mAh LiPo's on ebay and others to chhose from ... but make sure you get 20C or better ... I would go for personally a 3S 1300mAh 25C Lipo ... such as :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turnigy-lipo-1...3cbdad7924

or go to Hobbyking online site ....

In fact with HK you could do this :

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store...Combo.html

a package deal on ESC / motor and prop. Even gives you a stick mount ....
LiPo .... http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store..._Pack.html

or

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store..._Pack.html

Make sure you buy a number of batterys - nothing worse than having no power to fly !! I go to field with at least 4 packs to fit my model - plus the Imax B6 pro charger with 12v car lead ......... fast charge while flying with other batterys !!

as to props - go for a 8x6 APC or similar (sometimes referred to as E8060) ... that will give you good thrust / power on motors above.

Seriously - the whole point of my reply is to show that you can economically power your Cub so that it will fly well.

Go on - you know you want to sort it ... Wink

Most of the crash is fine - it's the last mm and second that's not !.... Ex Model Display flyer returning to hobby after 25yrs in the wilderness !.....http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Flysky_RC_radio/ if user of FlySky Radio where I hope to collect together helpful data
